Sassanid cities found in central Iran

Archeologists have uncovered the ruins of a fire temple and two Sassanid cities in Aran-o-Bidgol in the central Iranian province of Isfahan.

Sassanid fire temple in Vigol The first phase of excavations in Vigol archeological site yielded an ancient site spanning an area of nearly 100 hectares, which were once two Sassanid cities.

“The site which was buried under sand, had been flourishing human habitats from the Sassanid to the Islamic and Seljuk eras,” head of the archeology team Mohsen Javari told CHTN.

The team also discovered the lower parts of a Sassanid fire temple, including intact stucco decorations.

According to Javari, the find is the first of its kind in central Iran and the discovered fire temple is completely different with those found so far.

“Despite the mud-brick temples previously found in the area, this one is made of mud and clay,” he explained.

Former excavations had yielded Sassanid fire temples in the cities of Natanz and Niasar in Isfahan Province.
