It's Monday, What Are You Reading? July 19, 2010

It's Monday, What are you reading is a meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey

It’s Monday!  What Are You Reading, is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week.  It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

I had a pretty good week this week. There were no workmen underfoot (unlike last week and this coming week). Last week we had to move all the furniture from two bedrooms to have the old carpet removed and the red oak floors refinished. I will admit that they turned out really pretty. This week we are having all the windows replaced which means removing all the window treatments and moving things to at least 3 feet away from the windows. We have 15 windows and tons of stuff to move. Oh, the joys of living in a 60-year-old house!

Last week I read:
The Search by Nora Roberts - I really like her romantic suspense and this one was an excellent example of her work in the genre. Fiona and Simon were terrific characters. And the book had the cutest dog ever - a lab puppy named Jaws.

I finally finished A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson and came away from the exaperience awed by just how little we actually know about the universe, our planet and ourselves.

Legacies by Mercedes Lackey and Rosemary Edghill is the story of a magical boarding school and an orphan that could not be more different than Harry Potter. Spirit is depressed over the loss of her family and her injuries when she is sent there. And students are disappearing...

Twice Bitten by Chloe Neill is the third in the Chicagoland Vampire series. Merit has to make decisions about her loyalties in this one.

The Grimm Legacy by Polly Shulman has a high school student working in an unusual library. This one lends stuff including magical stuff from the Grimm collection. But objects are being checked out and returned without their magic.

Discord's Apple by Carrie Vaughn has a similar theme. In this one Evie comes home to find out that her family has held some magical objects in trust for over 3000 years and now characters out of history are coming to get them back.

I haven't reviewed these books. I might do a quick mini-review post later in the week.

In Other Worlds by Sherrilyn Kenyon is a collection of three novellas written in her worlds. The book reminded me that I have her League novels on my Kindle and haven't read them yet.

Barely a Lady by Eileen Dreyer is a Regency romance that is grittier than many. The story includes the Battle of Waterloo and main characters who are divorced but reunited when she finds him on the battlefield injured and with amnesia.
The reviews are written and scheduled for these books.

Linger by Maggie Stiefvater was the much anticipated sequel to Shiver. It was the most compelling book that I have read so far this summer. It had incredible emotional intensity.

Honeymoon of the Dead by Tate Hallaway ended the Garnet Lacey series and concerned everything that can go wrong when a witch marries a vampire. There are frost giants, battles between goddesses, Homeland Security, immigration issues, and various groups of vampire slayers.

I am currently reading The Mane Event by Shelly Laurenston on my Kindle. This is an erotic paranormal romance between a lion and a human. He was in the Navy; she was in the Marines and is now a police officer. They have been separated since they were 14 and he wants her now and forever. She isn't so sure. Her mind says that they don't belong together but her body says they really, really do.
I have been ignoring the Kindle in favor of the actual print books because reading print books makes it look like I'm making a dent in my TBR stack. But now I want to get a couple of books out of the queue on the Kindle (which currently has 360 books on it.)

Next week I'll be choosing books the way I have been all summer. I don't plan. I just rummage through my crates or Kindle directory for something that appeals to me. At the end of the week I will be participating in the Got Books? Event! and hosting a giveaway on my blog for either The Search or Discord's Apple. Stop back and enter on July 23.

Have a good week!
