A group of archaeologists has just found the skeletal remains of 79 people buried under a section of the Kuelap fortress in Peru's Amazonas region.
The Kuelap Archaeological Project members made the discovery while conducting restoration works of the fortress' walls that were damaged during the last rainy season.
Alfredo Narvaez, Director of the Conservation and Restoration project, confirmed this information to Lima daily Peru21, adding that almost no trace of organic tissue has been preserved, due to the high levels of humidity on the site.
“Most of the findings are bones from adult individuals, presumably from the Chachapoyas civilization, but we do not rule out the possibility of maybe finding remains of teens,” Narvaez was quoted as saying by livinginperu.com.
The Chachapoyas culture developed in the area between the 7th and 8th centuries.
