Archeologists of Primorie to Start Excavation of Most Ancient Site

On Thursday archeologists from Vladivostok start off to Hasansky District for excavation of the settlement dating to the 1st millennium B.C., where the first metal working workshopof that time was found in modern Primorie Territory.

Excavation of the Barabash Settlement The expedition of 30 persons goes to Barabash Settlement of Hasansky District for excavation of an early Iron Age site for the fourth time already. The settlement represents Yankovskaya archaeological culture. One of its distinctive features is the use of sea mollusks as food. This is supported by archeologists’ finds of heaps of cockleshells near ancient dwelling places. Judging by the finds, inhabitants of the settlement also went in for fishing, animal husbandry and agriculture.

An anvil and iron objects produced on it have been found on the archeological site. In this connection the main objective of the expedition this year is excavation of metal workshops.

Up to 150 persons lived in nine large dugouts on the area of the settlement under investigation. For the last three years archeologists have dug out two dwellings, and it is expected that this time researchers will unearth another one.
