Last Friday was a true milestone in Yup'ik language revitalization. Not only did Friday's University of Alaska Fairbanks graduation ceremony in Bethel include many commencement addresses in Yup'ik, it also featured the awarding of 18 M.A. degrees in Applied Linguistics, most focusing on Yup'ik language education.
In addition, Teresa John received a Ph.D. for her work on Yup'ik dance, and her father Paul John received an honorary doctorate.
A brief summary of the ceremony can be found in this Alaska Public Radio story.
