Just read
this announcement of three new dictionaries of the Southeast Alaska languages Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian. Also a Haida phrasebook. All four books are published by the
Sealaska Heritage Institute.
- Dictionary of Alaskan Haida
- Dictionary of Tlingit
- Dictionary of Shm’algyack (Tsimshian)
- Haida Phrasebook
The Tlingit dictionary will be the first dictionary of Tlingit verbs to be published since 1973. The Haida dictionary should prove to be much more accessible than the massive, academically-focused dictionary
published by ANLC in 2005. And as far as I know the Tsimshian dictionary will be the first to focus on the Alaskan dialect (though note the 2006
Sm'algyax Living Legacy Talking Dictionary).
I haven't yet seen copies of these books but am very much looking forward to them. They are sure to be valuable contributions to Alaska Native language documentation and revitalization.
