A rescue dig of an ancient cemetery discovered on the Ionian island of Leukada is currently underway. The cemetery, which dates to the fifth and fourth centuries BCE, was found during construction work on Filosofon street in the islands capital.
Described by Greek archaeologists as “an impressive burial complex”, the cemetery is thought to contain dozens of cist-type graves and sarcophagi. Several inscribed grave stelae and stone altars have also been found at the site.
