Yup'ik snowboarding

Okay, so this post isn't really about language, but after spending two weeks absorbed by the Vancouver Olympic games, I thought I should at least mention something about Callan Chythlook-Sifsof, said to be the first Native Alaskan Olympian. Callan competed in the new (to the Olympics, at least) sport of snowboard cross (or "boardercross"), and though she wiped out in the medal round, she ranked 21st in qualifications. Pretty good for a kid who is still recovering from an injury last season.

Callan was born and raised in the Bristol Bay Yup'ik village of Aleknagik (Alaqnaqiq in Yup'ik), where she learned to snowboard in the surrounding hills, dragged up by snowmachine. She then refined these skills at Mt. Alyeska when the family moved to Girdwood. There's a nice article about her in the Oct/Nov 2008 issue of First Alaskans Magazine. You can also follow Callan's activities on her website. The 2010 Olympics may be over, but Callan's competition season continues, taking her to Japan, France, Italy, Spain, Finland, Colorado, Quebec, and Switzerland -- all in the next six weeks!

I don't know how to say 'snowboard' in Yup'ik, so I'll try this: Assirluni cikulriiguq!
