The Iron King
Author: Julie Kagawa
Publication: Harlequin; Original edition (February 1, 2010)
Product Description from Amazon: Meghan Chase has a secret destiny—one she could never have imagined…
Something has always felt slightly off in Meghan's life, ever since her father disappeared before her eyes when she was six. She has never quite fit in at school…or at home.
When a dark stranger begins watching her from afar, and her prankster best friend becomes strangely protective of her, Meghan senses that everything she's known is about to change.
But she could never have guessed the truth—that she is the daughter of a mythical faery king and is a pawn in a deadly war. Now Meghan will learn just how far she'll go to save someone she cares about, to stop a mysterious evil no faery creature dare face…and to find love with a young prince who might rather see her dead than let her touch his icy heart.
There is also a really nice trailer for the book:
My Thoughts: I greatly enjoyed this book. Meghan was an interesting character. She's an outsider, poor, and feels unwanted and unnoticed by everyone except her little brother Ethan and her one friend Robin Goodfell. She has high hopes for her 16th birthday. But after being humiliated at school and finding that her brother has been kidnapped and a changeling put in his place, she is determined to do anything to get him back. She will even go to faery.
Robin Goodfell, her prankster friend, is revealed to be Puck and to be acting on the orders of her real father Oberon. He is her guide. She encounters many obstacles in her trip through faery. She makes enemies and gathers friends including a cat named Grim and a prince named Ash. Puck and Ash are sworn enemies but unite to help Meghan. Both are also rivals for Meghan's love.
I liked the new variations on the fey. The iron fey make perfect logical sense as beings created by our beliefs in technology. I am looking forward to Meghan's further adventures in books two and three.
