White Dog greeted Debra like the long absent friend that she was. White Dog then sat politely as Debra, a cancer survivor, and I shared and compared our life-changing experiences. It was wonderful to speak of the trials and triumphs with someone who knew that reality--and it was especially fulfilling to commune with a fellow writer about the matter. White Dog alternated between Debra's lap and mine, intently following the conversation, in her own way telling of her fear and sense of loss that she experienced during my hospital stay. By the end of the afternoon, amid many teary hugs, we all three felt comforted.
