White Dog and I have resurrected an old favorite; afternoon siesta--not a nap but a rest midafternoon where we lay together on the bed with the fan blowing on us and I read aloud to her. Our current read is Garth Stein's The Art of Racing in the Rain. It is the story of Enzo, a philosopher who happens to be a dog. White Dog really enjoys his insights into humans, his own near humanness, and the universe. It is a tale of family devotion, sacrifice, and competitive racing as told by Enzo who has educated himself by watching the TV which his master leaves on during the day to keep him company. There have been many passages where White Dog looks at me pointedly with her "I told you so" eyes. We are thoroughly enjoying our time and the novel. We recommend everyone get the book, take some summer relaxing time, and share--human and canine side-by-side!
