Muddy street, 1909

Augusta, Georgia, 1909. Another photo from the Shorpy archive. What's interesting to me, apart from the muddy streets and the children standing at attention, are the water faucets at the curb. Seen better on fullscreen view, the faucets were apparently an intermediate step between the 19th century common well and the yet-to-be-installed indoor plumbing, which presumably would require some retrofitting of the houses. I had never before seen a photo showing individual faucets in front of every house. You learn something every day.
