White Dog and Steve tried to save our floundering miniature peach tree. Only 3' tall, it yielded only a handful of peaches each year that White Dog, Steve and I made a ritual of protecting from the birds until they were ripe enough to pluck and slice over vanilla ice cream. This Spring the tree failed to produce any leaves. Steve gave the tree extra water and compost. White Dog aerated the roots and kept the birds away. Both were forced to admit defeat when this evening's wind snapped the brittle tree in half. Not one to waste an opportunity, White Dog did attempt to drag the poor remains inside to trade.
