General Sees New U.S. Troops In Afghan War By Summer

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The 17,000 additional U.S. troops President Barack Obama ordered sent to Afghanistan will be operational by summer, before the country's August presidential election, the top commander of NATO and U.S. forces said on Wednesday.

"I will use most of those forces in the southern part of Afghanistan, an area where we do not have sufficient security presence," U.S. Army General David McKiernan told a news conference.

Summer in Afghanistan also coincides with the annual peak of counterinsurgency operations, he said.
