Equatorial Guinea Hit By 'Dogs Of War' Attack

Gunmen in speed boats launched an attack on Equatorial Guinea's presidential palace on Tuesday in what appeared to be an attempted coup.

The assault, almost identical to the plot of Frederick Forysth's novel The Dogs of War, was launched at 5.30am when residents of the capital were woken by the sounds of gunfire echoing across the Spanish colonial town.

The oil-rich country has suffered decades of instability and Simon Mann, an Old Etonian former SAS officer, is currently serving a 34-year sentence for mounting a coup in 2004, in which Mark Thatcher was implicated.

A source close to Mann's alleged backer in the operation, the Lebanese – British businessman Ely Calil, denied any involvement in the latest assault.
