2009 Athabascan conference to be held in California

The 2009 Athabascan (Dene) Languages Conference will be held in Berkeley, California this coming July 10-12. While it may seem odd to host an Athabaskan conference in California, bear in mind that California is home to at least two Athabascan languages, Hupa and Tolowa (the latter extending across the border into Oregon). Moreover, Berkeley is an important center for the documentation and revitalization of California Indian languages, there is quite a bit of active work on Athabascan going on there. Check out the Survey of California and Other Indian Languages. The meeting is also held in conjunction with the biannual Linguistic Society of America summer linguistics institute.

The 2009 conference will feature a special session on Athabaskan Origins and another on Toponyms (Place Names).
