Obama's Pentagon Pick Foresees Budget Crunch

WASHINGTON, Jan 15 (Reuters) - President-elect Barack Obama's choice for the Pentagon's second-ranking job said on Thursday it would be tough to pay for all of the existing big-ticket U.S. weapons programs under current circumstances.

But William Lynn, who would be the deputy secretary of defense, and other Obama nominees for top Pentagon jobs did not spell out which arms programs, if any, they would cut or stretch out.

"If current trends continue, it will be very difficult to sustain a force large enough to meet the demands associated with both near-term operations and the long-term defense strategy," Lynn told the Senate Armed Services Committee that is expected to confirm his nomination.

My Comment: I can see the battles between the Obama administration and Congress right now.

If times start to get really bad .... which is what the Obama administration has been predicting since the election .... expect Congress to protect (if not expand) military contracts and procurements. The Pentagon budget may actually expand in the next four years .... a development that will surprise this blogger.
