Zimbabwe Cholera Epidemic Could Hit 60,000

Up to 60,000 people in Zimbabwe could become infected with cholera if the epidemic there gets out of control, the World Health Organisation said today.

The United Nations health agency estimates that 589 people have died of cholera in Zimbabwe as of December 5, with 13,960 suspected cases declared, but these figures are based on the number of people reporting to health centres in the poverty-stricken country.

As many health centres are no longer operational, the actual toll is likely to be higher, the WHO said. In a worst-case scenario, up to 60,000 people could become infected.

My Comment: Considering the collapse of the health system, I would tend towards to higher figure of 60,000.
