Warbot Maker Redesigns Machines for Afghanistan

The military's most popular bomb-disposal robot is being redesigned for a new mission. Since 9/11, the U.S. armed forces have sent 2,500 Talon machines overseas -- mostly to Iraq -- to help get rid of improvised explosives.

But in Afghanistan, where the fighting has intensified, unexploded Soviet mines left over from the invasion and the civil wars that followed, pose a new threat. Last year, more than 600 people were killed or wounded by the abandoned ordnance.
