The commando-style siege blamed on Lashkar-e-Taiba in Mumbai last month is raising new concerns in the United States intelligence community, both about the tactics used and the unsettling possibility the operation was conducted independent of al Qaeda.
That could mean there is a new global terrorist organisation to combat, requiring the resources and attention now focused on combating Osama bin Laden's organisation.
"People are looking closely at whether [Lashkar] is trying deliberately to raise its profile vis-a-vis other terrorist organisations and/or its geographic footprint," a US counterterrorism official said.

My Comment: Lashkar-e-Taiba is one of many terror groups that exits in the world today. It's tactics and strategy are different from most groups, but it's intent is clear. To attack India and the countries that support her so that she (India) would be forced to leave Kashmir.
But Lashkar-e-Taiba is also different because of the support that it receives from many in the Pakistani establishment. If it was not for this tacit support, Lashkar-e-Taiba would not be in a position to threaten anyone but those within its orbit.
