India Will Set Up Federal Agency to Combat Terrorism -- Bloomberg

Dec. 16 (Bloomberg) -- India will create a federal agency to combat terrorism as part of a national security overhaul following last month’s attack on Mumbai, the government said yesterday.

Authorities are also planning to strengthen coastal borders, improve training for anti-terrorism officers and bolster the country’s intelligence agencies.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is under pressure over security failings that allowed militants armed with guns and grenades to attack 13 sites in India’s financial hub and hold off security forces for almost three days. The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party ran newspaper advertisements after the attacks showing blood splattered on a wall and proclaiming “Weak Government.”
