Fears For Zimbabwean Activists Accused Of Coup Plot Against Robert Mugabe

There were fears for the safety of eight Zimbabwean pro-democracy activists last night after armed police ignored a high court order to release them.

The group, including Jestina Mukoko, 54, director of the Zimbabwe Peace Project, was charged on Christmas eve in the Harare Magistrate's Court with plotting a coup against President Robert Mugabe.

Hours later Judge Yunus Omerjee ordered Mrs Mukoko and her co accused to be sent to hospital, and a dozen more held in police cells be released immediately, as he said their detentions were illegal but one of the lawyers attending to the detainees said Mrs Mukoko and the eight, including a two-year-old had not been released but were taken to a maximum security prison early yesterday.
