Wiggle - Day 107
This week I'm working nights but Wiggle has been good and sleeping during the day while I've been asleep. We've managed to avoid the showers and get out with Sir H for some walking and ball fetching.
Wiggle will no doubt be glad when the weekend comes as we're away so he'll get some longer and more interesting walks!
Bishkek, the Kyrgyz capital
Overall, Bishkek is not going to be the most exciting place you've ever visited. But it's not without it's charms. It does have to be said though, be careful at night. Firstly, poorly lit streets+open sewers=disaster. Secondly, Kyrgyz men like to drink and they aren't very good drunks. If you notice a group of young Kyrgyz men on a bit of a bender, head the other way. They like to fight to prove there manhood.
Indonesian Elections and Some History.
Rich and Poor in Indonesia
In 2009, there are to be elections in Indonesia, which has the world's 4th largest population.
Will Indonesia get a Chavez? Or a General? Or a housewife who likes to go shopping?
In 1998, Suharto was toppled as President of Indonesia, reportedly by the CIA working with certain generals.
Suharto
Reportedly, the CIA were hoping to replace Suharto with a younger general, someone like Prabowo, who would give more contracts to Americans, rather than to the Suharto family members and Chinese cronies.
Unfortunately for the CIA, the military was not a united body.
Megawati
Prabowo got sacked and eventually, in 2001, Sukarno's daughter Megawati Sukarnoputri became president.
Sukarno had been toppled by the CIA and MI6 in the mid 1960s and so Megawati was not a great fan of the USA.
Sukarno Megawati was accused of being a lightweight housewife who was being controlled by certain nationalist generals. Many of her followers were disappointed by her conservatism and inaction.
Reportedly the CIA and certain generals planned an event to change the political situation. In 2002 the Bali Bombings took place. After the 2004 elections, American-trained General (retired) Yudhoyono became president.
Yudhoyono
Under Yudhoyono:
1. The rich have got richer and the poor have got poorer. Malnutrition is common.
Indonesia has become more like Israel-Palestine; with the poor sometimes pushed off their land; and the homes of the poor hidden behind high walls.
2. The military are untouchables when it comes to 'crimes' such as East Timor massacres.
Indonesian President General (retired) Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and former president Megawati Sukarnoputri are now neck-and-neck in the opinion polls. (The General vs the Lady)
No signs of a Chavez.
~~
The Indonesia News Blog (The General vs the Lady) is relatively kind to Yudhoyono:
"Under Dr Yudhoyono, who on Sunday announced his plan to stand for re-election in 2009, Indonesia has made significant progress.
"The former general appointed capable technocrats, who have shaken up key departments and delivered economic growth of 6.3 per cent in 2007, the best performance in over a decade.
"The anti-graft authorities have tackled a wide array of corruption cases, which according to Transparency International's latest survey is starting to pay off. This should help restore confidence among foreigners who frequently cite bribery as a deterrent to investment.
"Thanks to four years of political stability and peace, for example in several religious and secessionist hotspots, Indonesia has begun to shrug off its reputation as a chaotic, dangerous, hopeless country.
"Critics say Dr Yudhoyono is too consensus-driven, reflecting the fact that his tiny Democratic Party relies on Golkar, and a hodge-podge of smaller parties for support in parliament..."

CDP THEME DAY - LINES / Herding Cats!
This is a loose interpretation of LINES! I shot this at my church as a class of 3 year olds did their very best at walking down the stairs in a LINE! The term "herding cats" sprang to mind. I could hardly hold the camera as I attempted to keep from laughing AND help Miss Brenda get them ready for the ascent, "hands on the railing." There you have it- sort of a line. The bottom photo is my favorite. This is my precious next door neighbor who was the first to arrive at the bottom. I caught him after he had a few spins around the cross.
Man Blamed For Bhutto Killing Is Dead
Mr Mehsud (back to the camera) does not like being photographed. He recently announced a ceasefire, but has warned that it will be jeopardised if the government "continues to be slaves to the US".From CNN:
(CNN) -- The leader of Pakistan's Taliban, Baitullah Mehsud, is dead from kidney failure, sources told CNN.
The Pakistan government blamed Mehsud for the December 27, 2007, assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.
An unnamed Islamabad-based source with connections within the Mehsud tribe in South Waziristan said Mehsud died about 1 a.m. Wednesday. Military officials in the field confirmed to CNN that Mehsud had died.
Geo Television of Pakistan and other local stations also reported his death.
But some reports also had the Taliban denying Mehsud's death.
Earlier reports said the leader of the Taliban in Pakistan was ill and was expected to die within a day. Mehsud is said to have succumbed to kidney failure and was believed to be about 34 years old.
Mehsud denied involvement in Bhutto's assassination.

My Comment: The death of the man (if true) who is regarded as the head of the Pakistan Taliban is a big blow for that organization. The man who will succeed him will have big shoes to fill in .... let us hope that he fails.

Δυστυχώς όμως οι αληθινοί άνθρωποι είναι λίγοι και δεν χαίρουν προβολής (και εκτίμησης πλέον). Ενώ οι άλλοι ...φευ. Γι' αυτό και πρέπει να σταχυολογήσεις ειδήσεις 15 εφημερίδων για να βρεις έναν. Μήπως σας θυμίζει το Διογένη με το φανάρι του , ή τον Άσιμο που έψαχνε κροκανθρώπους;

Porsche's Three Stooges: 912, 924, 968
The Three Stooges: Curly, Moe, Larry (left to right)The public's perception of the Three Stooges mirrors the perception of Porsche's entry level models: the 912, 924, and 968. These cars are seen by most car fans as imposters that barely deserve the Porsche badge on the hood. They are weak, uninspired, and unsophisticated. But for a few dedicated devotees, they are just as good, if not better, than their peers.
Porsche 912, Moe. As the oldest of the three cars, the 912 is the elder statesman, relatively speaking. It carried a 356-based four-cylinder engine, a nod to tradition (sort of like Moe's Vaudeville influence). The 912 weighed 250 pounds less than the more powerful, six-cylinder 911, thus improving balance, gas mileage, and arguably, the fun factor.
Porsche 924, Larry. Larry is perhaps the most talented of the Stooges but is heavily underrated, even ignored. This is the story of the 924. With rear drum brakes and an engine from a VW van, the car's internals were not pretty. It was by no means a traditional sports car. People questioned its heritage and wondered aloud whether the front-engined, water cooled 924 was a "real" Porsche. Similarly, Larry Fine was not related to the Howard brothers, Moe and Curly. But with its simpler design and lower maintenance costs (than the 944), the 924 is finally getting some well-deserved respect from weekend racers and hobbyists.
Porsche 968, Curly. Plump performer. That perfectly describes Curly and the 968. They both weigh much more than their brethren and yet they seem to have more energy and power than Moe (912) and Larry (924). And as the last front-engined Porsche coupe, so dies a legend that may never see an equal. R.I.P.
CKYIraqi Leaders Closely Watching U.S. Elections
From Pajamas Media:
I mentioned this past summer that pressing priorities in Iraq made Iraqis show little if any interest in the upcoming U.S. election. That was the case when November seemed too far to worry about. We’re almost in October now and things are changing.
Comments made by MP Sami al-Askari are evidence of such a trend. As an adviser to Prime Minister Maliki and member of his Da’wa Party, al-Askari’s comments are definitely indicative of what’s being discussed in that small circle and probably reflect Maliki’s own viewpoints.
As recent as June, al-Askari’s position echoed Maliki’s approval of a 16-month timetable for withdrawal. But three months can indeed make a difference. “Iraqis are better off with Republicans,” al-Askari said in an email to Kathleen Parker at NRO last week.

The ‘Talibanization Of Pakistan's Biggest City
From World Blog/MSNBC:
KARACHI, Pakistan – In the back of a jeep driving through Karachi, a sign on the wall of the city’s famous "Village Restaurant" caught my eye. It was just a little piece of frayed white paper plastered next to the restaurant’s much bigger logo, tempting customers to "Experience the Exotic of Traditional Dining."
But the printed sign expressed an increasingly urgent plea in this teeming port city, once Pakistan’s capital: "Save your city from Talibanization," it said in English.
But could the Taliban really be taking over Karachi? Karachi is Pakistan’s biggest city, far from the lawless tribal hinterland along the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Out there, Taliban and al-Qaida militants have carved out an independent state. In the mountains, militants have their own courts and even issue licenses to local business. Last week in the tribal area, the Taliban publicly executed a group accused of murders. In another village square, they flogged several butchers for allegedly selling the meat of sick animals. That is Taliban justice.
U.S. military and intelligence officials consider that border area to be the world’s biggest, most dangerous safe haven for Taliban and al-Qaida fighters. Osama bin Laden, Mullah Omar and nearly all of their deputies have been based, and may still be based, in this often impassible mountain terrain.
But I was in Karachi, a giant city on the Indian Ocean. If Karachi is being ‘Talibanized,’ Pakistan is in real trouble, and so is everyone else.

My Comment: The reporter from MSNBC emphasizes his post on how these students view American policy .... but their hatred is more intense when it is directed against India. Radical Islamists and Hindus have been at war with each other for centuries .... this will only now get more intense as more Islamists occupy positions of influence andpower.
Missing stuff.
Sorry I havn't posted in a while, I've been busy taking care of my big sis Lily. When I first came here, she taught me lots of stuff and showed me they way around. A little while ago, she had to go to the vet and have her leg fixed. I have been doing my best to help her feel better.
I miss playing with her. She always whoops my butt. But hey, I admit, I can be a brat sometimes. I'd whoop my butt too, if I were her.
I miss going on walks with her. She is fun, and a bit crazy too. Sometimes she jumps in the lake and then tries to get me to go in too. No way sis, the water is way too deep for my short legs. I'd sink like a stone if I went in.
I miss laying in the morning sun with her. She almost always gets the good spot, mostly cause I eat breakfast too slow and she gets there first. But sometimes she lets me share the good spot with her. I really like when she does that.
I was so happy when she started feeling better and I finally got to lay in the sun with her again. The vet fixed her up all better. Maybe this vet guy isn't too bad after all. I think it may be sometime before we can play again, but I'm just happy to have my big sis back.
I missed her.

Africans Wary On New US Command For Continent
From International Herald Tribune:DAKAR, Senegal: A new command takes over all U.S. military operations in Africa on Wednesday, a program that many Africans fear has a hidden agenda skewed by the war on terror and a self-interested scramble for resources.
Before Africom was created one year ago, American military programs on the continent had been divvied up among three other commands more concerned with NATO and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The new command is inheriting responsibility for a Centcom-run base in Djibouti, where 1,800 troops are deployed to keep Horn of Africa terror networks in check. It also takes over European Command's Trans-Sahara Counterterrorism Initiative and dozens of other military and maritime training programs.
"Africans believe Africom is aimed at promoting America's interests, not Africa's," said Wafula Okumu, a Kenyan analyst at South Africa's Institute for Security Studies. Most Africans don't trust their own militaries, which in places like Congo have turned weapons on their own people.
My Comment: This is long overdue. The sad fact is that Africa will be experiencing economic and social problems for decades .... which in turn will spawn military confrontations and conflicts. The U.S. has an interest in Africa, as well as a moral duty to have a presence there so that Rwandan type genocides or Darfur conflicts cannot easily develop. Will Africom have an impact .... I do not know .... but I am hopeful (OK, I am an optimist) that Africom will find a way to have a positive influence with the resources that it has at its disposal.

October's challenge promises to be the best yet. It will also be the last time I blog every vehicle submitted. After that, I will be highlighting my favourites. I hope that does not dissuade any from participating, but blogging that many entries has become fairly time consuming.
See you all after the 'con.
