One way of gaining publicity for your brand is to pay for a motor racing team to splash it over their cars and kit. Another way is to get sued for non-payment of sponsorship fees and get your brand featured in the business press. Formula One entrepreneur Eddie Jordan sued telecoms giant Vodaphone for not paying $100m sponsorship cash to his Jordan F1 team. Sadly for him the claim failed, leaving him with £5m in legal costs.
The IPKat says: "if you want to prove the existence of a £100m sponsorship deal, try putting the contract in writing. One man's disputed account of a telephone conversation with another is not the strongest evidence".
