PLAYING CHICKEN?Not for the first time, a Democratic President has found it expedient to triangulate away from his party’s left wing, tacitly encouraging their howls of displeasure as a way of demonstrating to the country (and to party centrists) that he is a moderate compromiser. In the end, the calculation goes, the left will come around to support him because where else do they have to go?
